And get ready to embark on a new adventure with us around the globe.
Hey squaddies, Travel Squad Podcast is back with Just the Tip, our Friday mini episode series where we give you quick travel stories, hacks and recommendations to set you off into the weekend.
Right.
Today we are exploring luggage.
0:53
I have been on a luggage journey this year.
I am on a mission to replace my hard shell carry on and my checked bag because both of them the wheels suck and it is like pumping iron trying to get this thing through the airport terminals.
It’s not a good experience and I know the ones these days have these spinning wheels that are just so smooth.
1:14
It just floats itself through the airport really.
So I want to invest in something high quality, something that’s going to last, something that has good design aesthetics, but also functional.
And I know you 2 also have some bags that you want to replace pretty soon.
Yeah, Jamal, carry on luggage.
1:31
It’s, you know, now our new podcast Mike Holder, because it was just going down the drain.
The wheels would get stuck, it would spin right.
And some of our other luggage, it just feels like, like you said, pumping iron like it was a workout to roll it.
1:47
Like, you really feel like the whole 50 lbs that’s in there, you’re pulling that right behind you.
Yeah, they’ve definitely hit their lifespan.
We actually do have a new luggage one that’s actually on this list that we’re going to be telling you guys about that we really, really love and unique features of different luggages, different styles, etcetera.
2:06
So we’re going to get into that a little bit later.
But having the right luggage suitcase bag, it’s super essential to your traveling.
Kind of like you said, Kim, you know, it needs to have an aesthetic, but it also needs to be functional.
And everybody’s different on what they want, right?
2:22
There’s no right or wrong depending on what somebody’s style and needs are.
So we have a nice list here talking about different luggages that can really help you guys depending on, again, that style, need and aesthetic that you’re looking for.
As I’ve been on this luggage journey, I’ve I’ve seen what’s out there right what we’re seeing a lot of sleek luggage designs, some really unique pockets that the way they’re designed for extra space and compact ability.
2:50
There’s some real functional options out there right now.
I really think that luggage design is going to continue to advance.
Even though we’re seeing more sleek and modern luggages, there’s still like a lot of them look the same.
I predict with my thumb on the forefront of fashion.
I think we’re going to start to see more character and style in our luggage in the years to come.
3:11
Like unique shapes.
We already see that a lot in fashion where like a a rose has become the skirt and it’s almost surrealism in fashion.
I have a feeling we’re going to see this in luggage too.
Well, I can’t wait to stay tuned and see what comes our way, because there’s nothing like having a sleek piece of functional luggage.
3:29
First one I want to talk about is Bays.
Most people know Bays, but Bays has an amazing carry on roller suitcase that really is just that.
That sleek design comes in a lot of colors.
The spinny wheels are smooth 360 design.
3:46
It’s a good all around luggage and it’s somewhat affordably priced when you consider what else is out there on the market right now.
And this one that we’re talking about, Kim, I know you said you’re ditching your hard shell, but you’re talking your current hard shell.
This one is also a hard shell 1.
So if this is your style hard shell, Bayes is a good one here for you.
4:05
It has a retractable latch to hook on other bags.
It has a built in weight indicator, TSA approved locks, etcetera, and tons of colors to choose from.
So Bayes is a really good reliable suitcase.
And also, so again, if that hard shell component is your style, this is kind of really up somebody’s alley and of course already has the locks for you.
4:27
You don’t need to go and buy a lock to lock the zipper built in.
Next on our list is a high tech carry on.
It’s from Hayes Smart Luggage and it’s also a hard chair luggage, but it connects to an app on your phone and the smart handle has like an integrated scale within it.
4:44
So you’ll never have to worry about how much your luggage weighs because you’ll always know.
You can also lock and unlock your suitcase from the app, which I think is really cool.
And there is GPS tracking with an alarm that alerts you when you’re a distance away from your luggage.
5:00
So, you know, a lot of people were purchasing and us as well, those air tags.
This eliminates the need for that because it’s all in your luggage within the app.
Yeah.
And you could maybe say, well, I mean, if I already have an air tag, why do I need this?
And maybe so, but sometimes we forget to put our air tag in our luggage.
5:17
As a matter of fact, on the last trip that we took, I forgot to put my air tag in my luggage.
And ever since I’ve had an air tag, I’ve had the comfort to know what’s on the plane.
This was the first time really that I said to myself, oh gosh, I don’t even know if it’s on the plane.
And I really was worried about it a little bit.
So if you are a tech savvy person and you like stuff like this, this is a really great luggage for you.
5:38
Again, GPS in it.
So you don’t really need that air tag.
The locks that you have are TSA approved locks and it also opens via Bluetooth, so you don’t even need to mess around with it.
Lots of really cool techie features about this one.
And as you would imagine, it’s looking like Optimus Prime over here.
5:55
So it’s got the robot vibes on this suitcase.
Luggage #3 is one that really stands out for being a solid, not a hard shell, a soft shell carry on suitcase that is really sustainable.
And some suitcases now are doing this where they recycle water bottles and different plastic pieces to help craft the luggage.
6:17
But Ricardo Beverly Hills Avalon Collection really stands out for this and they make it look good.
It actually looks like a high end suitcase made of recycled materials and we’d love to see it.
And you know, in fairness, I am not a hard shell person for a suitcase.
I’ve never had one.
So maybe that’s where my bias is.
6:34
But you hit the nail on the head with that one, Kim.
Like this luggage is really sleek in its design, especially for a soft shell.
It really looks like it is high class.
But what I really love most about this luggage is you were talking earlier about how some luggages the wheels just glide full blown 360.
6:53
It really feels super lightweight when you’re rolling it, even when it is actually full and packed and it it also makes going through TSA a breeze.
I really love this luggage because it actually has a compartment out the top of it by the handle where you can put in your wallet and phone when you are going through security.
7:12
A lot of times when I take my stuff out of my pocket, I have to shove it like in my backpack or with my other suitcase that I had before that, but put it in one of the zipper areas that they have, but it’s not designed specifically for that.
So that’s filled with other stuff.
So I don’t know if I always have the space.
7:27
It’s always in a different spot.
This one makes it really easy.
It comes with built in locks just as well so you don’t have to really worry about buying another lock doing it with the zippers.
It’s all included and I am a really big fan of the Ricardo of Beverly Hills.
This is my new everyday go to carry on luggage.
7:43
The 360 spin on this one is chef’s kiss.
Like I said, it glides.
It’s like you’re ice skating out there really smooth.
I also love that it has a built in wet pocket and on every vacation we take a swimsuit.
But do I always bring a bag to put my swimsuit in or have enough time to let it air dry?
8:02
Sometimes I don’t.
Sometimes I don’t want to stand there with a dryer trying to dry out my swimsuit.
So it has a built in wet pocket, so if your bathing suit still a little damp you can stick it in there and it’ll protect the rest of your luggage.
The next one is a luxury carry on from Horizon Studios.
8:20
It’s the M5 cabin luggage, 37 liters.
It is the best of both worlds.
This is the luggage that I am most excited about.
It is a hard shell suit but it has the zippered fronts in this high end fabric material that matches the suitcase perfectly.
8:38
It’s aesthetically pleasing and functional as well.
It’s most beautiful suitcase I’ve ever seen.
That is a bold statement there, Kim.
Most beautiful you’ve ever seen.
I love it.
You know, it does have a sleek design, that is no doubt.
Yeah, this one is a great suitcase.
8:53
Just as well.
And let me know about this one, Kim, because I know you have utilized this one and like it a lot.
So you’re saying it’s a hard shell, but you have pockets on it on the front that are soft, so that portion kind of expands out if you need to put something on it too?
Yep, it kind of expands out.
9:08
You could put your laptop in there, You could put your cords, cables, sunglasses, like papers, all those printed documents that you always print out.
Wow.
There’s even another zipper pocket on that pocket that folds out.
So yeah, you get best of both worlds and.
9:23
I was just about to say that.
Because you love the hard sheared luggage?
Because you love bringing alcohol back from other countries.
And why bottles and you’re always worried about?
And it compresses better when you’re trying to fit a lot in.
Yeah, and Jamal and I are more soft shelled luggage, but this is really the best of both worlds.
9:40
And I do like the design.
It is sleek.
It’s definitely high end.
This next item is a personal tote bag.
It’s the perfect overnight bag from Kuyana.
It’s a classy design.
And what I really love about it is it’s made out of recycled knit.
9:56
It comes in two different colors.
It comes in a beautiful cappuccino color or a sleek black design, and it has a sleeve on the back of it to hook onto your carry on luggage as well.
So if you are traveling with a larger bag, you can just use this as an attachment and it’s perfect for an overnight trip.
10:12
It’s really giving that old money, quiet luxury aesthetic.
It’s so beautiful and it’s the perfect thing to put on top of your carry on suitcase when you’re going through the airport because it opens up big, it zips up.
But then yeah, you could use it for just a one night or two.
You guys said two things that I really wanted to to say about this is that Brittany, you said it’s perfect for like an overnight.
10:33
So yeah, it’s a great tote to go with another suitcase if you need more space.
But it’s the perfect just simple overnight.
And then Kim, you said it looks like old money, basically like meaning elegant.
You know, the only thing I don’t like about this one is that it looks like it’s only designed for women because it has that type of look.
10:50
But this is like a nice just like let me carry it and has really good pockets and things on the inside.
Very classy, stylish and a great personal tote handbag for you guys.
I could actually see you, Brittany, wearing this like in your late 40s.
11:06
You’ll be ready for this.
My late 40s I got like 15 more years.
Just a couple more.
The next item we have here for you guys that we want to talk about is a suitcase style backpack offered by Tortuga.
11:22
It is a carry on size backpack that has great pocket space, great features for packing this and that.
But what I really like about it too is if you don’t want to wear it as a backpack, you can carry it on the side as if it is a little suitcase or briefcase.
11:38
So it’s multifunctional in that sense of things to where it has two different styles here and it is great for either men or women.
Super sleek rectangular design backpack.
And even though it is a backpack, it is carry on size, so it’s larger than your typical backpack and can fit a week’s worth of, you know, clothing, shoes, all that kind of stuff into one backpack.
12:01
You’re wearing that on your back or duffel style, like Jamal was saying.
If you are wearing it on your back, it’s going to be kind of heavy, as I’ve learned from taking my first backpacking trip last year.
So it has these hip straps that you can hook on.
So it takes some of that weight off of your back.
If you were planning a long trip like going through Southeast Asia or Latin America or backpacking Europe, this is what I would recommend that you bring.
12:24
And you know what I really love most about this too?
It is waterproof, so you don’t really have to worry about it too much in that sense, depending on where you are, of course, don’t throw it in the water or anything like that.
But if you’re going out somewhere and it happens to be rainy, misty, waterproof.
12:40
So really sleek in its design that way.
So we were just talking about that suitcase style backpack, but if you are just bringing a personal item on a trip and you are taking a regular backpack, Jamal and I both have two different versions of the Matin Travel backpack and I really do love this backpack.
12:58
I have one that’s a little bit smaller than Jamal, but it has a dedicated compartment for my laptop.
My laptop’s a little bit on the larger side.
I think mine’s about a 15 inch and it can fit my whole laptop in it.
And then it has the larger compartment for the essentials.
Then it has a few other smaller pockets, but I what I really love are that the straps are well padded and they’re comfortable, so if you’re carrying them a long time on your trip, they don’t dig into you like some other backpacks do.
13:26
And it has a strap to attach onto your luggage as well, so you can just easily glide it while you’re in the airport.
And this backpack is kind of a techie backpack as well.
It does have a USB port with a built in charger inside to make it very easy for you to charge your phone on the go, so it does have that feature.
13:44
It is water resistant, not proof, but still something that you can rely on to some degree as long as you’re not in a full blown downpour.
It comes in a plethora of different colors and honestly when this backpack goes kaput, I’m actually getting this backpack again because this is my favorite everyday go to travel backpack.
14:03
I really do like its design, sleekness and all the type of different pocket space and features that it does have.
Squatty’s we just wanted to hit you with a couple of the top luggages that we’re seeing out today.
And if you’re looking for something, hopefully this inspires you to get something functional and cute.
